To Teach

An essay

To Teach

To Teach

To teach is to pause and listen to a learner’s mind amidst jarring noise,

Ignoring for it a whole world within

that says, “speak!”

To teach is to listen with eager eyes

when silence feels longer than your lesson plan…

To wait as a thought takes birth—

fragile, uncertain, yet alive.

To probe, not push.

To guide independent ideas

without leaving your own fingerprints.

To build thought, questions and curiosities

within the strict confining impositions of time.

To arrange care like invisible furniture in a room—

so children stand taller without knowing why.

To dramatise, not for effect,

but to let the beauty of that thought turn eternal,

in young memories.

To go through the pains every day

to prepare a learning environment that

becomes the free space, the safe haven,

that feels like ‘a room of one’s own’

To relax, to wonder, to inquire and roam.

To see young hearts more clearly

than they see themselves.

To model the smile that inspires pure joy.

To be there for them when there is no other.

To be present to address the truths and dare.

To vibe the calm amidst the scare.

To breathe life into each germinating

fragment of Hope.

To perch in the soul as courage,

As wisdom, as strength, as determination,

as the air beneath their wings.

To nurture, to stretch, to let go.

To immerse in each experience

with heart and soul.

That is the quiet, fierce art of teaching, an art that flows through the soul!

Beautiful and poignant. Written with immeasurable sensitivity and depth that only great teachers characterize. Indeed, teaching is an art - of patience, faith, belief...we, the teachers are the unseen wind beneath the wings our children soar upon. Resonated with each thought you have put down!

Here’s a warm and respectful comment you could add for Dr. Amrita’s poem: --- "Dr. Amrita, your poem is a profound tribute to the soul of teaching. The way you capture the unseen patience, love, and quiet strength a teacher embodies moved me deeply. It reminds us that teaching is not just instruction—it’s presence, nurture, and an invisible architecture of hope. Thank you for putting into words what so many of us feel but cannot express with such beauty."

....and the bravehearts who do it without fanfare or chest thumping are the rarest of the rare...so much in education today is about grabbing eyeballs or garnering likes that the child gets lost in the montage of the event...thank you for highlighting the why of the how so poignantly..
